Betty never met her parents or knew her clutch mates. As soon as she hatched in captivity she was broken and trained to obey humans. She was surgically altered, her firebox removed, teeth and claws blunted. Whipped and beaten regularly to be trained to obey in fear of punishment. Language training was provided enough to do their jobs.

When she was of selling age she was sold to a rich family as an exotic pet to their daughter Amelia. Amelia however bonded well with Betty and enjoyed spending time with her. Over time Amelia taught Betty fully how to read and write and Betty learned to fly and carry in saddle from a professional, if abusive, trainer. Amelia learned to ride and spent many years with Betty, who became a friend and protector along with a pet.

Amelia was always though of poor health, having a genetic disorder that eventually claimed her life as a young adult. Betty was sold to a new owner across the sea but while she was being shipper her cargo ship ran into a breach to Infinitas.
